I like fat freddies drop, chinese man, dj food, RJD2, mr scruff and other ninja tunes stuff however my girlfriend was playing some nice mildly hippyish folk and I found that its not distracting at all to program to :)

EDIT:Oh and i will always love hendrix, joplin and a handfull of other hippies from that era but bob dylan can shut up whining about whatever it is, he should have just wrote music for jimmy.

I mainly listen to metal and techno. If you like incredibly strange VGM, this is my favorite from the hotline miami soundtrack.

@LB, Muse is from Devon :D. I think their version of feeling good is awesome.

Depends on the mood.

Hip-hop is the flavour of the month at the moment; Nas, Public Enemy, Run DMC.

For what it's worth, Muse are horrendous. </opinion></fact>

Back in HS I used to be a metal head.... but I grew out of that pretty quick.

Now I'm mostly a soft-electronica guy. Female vocalists are a plus but not a strict requirement (though most music in the genre tends to have female vocalists because it fits the style more).

A few lasting favorites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idtRhja2rAM ---- Zero 7 - Destiny
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSKKBO1nfbE ---- Blue Stone - Waters Flow
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLcvqt-8v0k ---- Moodorama - Sweet Toffee
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J71FLwVNps8 ---- Bebel Gilberto - Aganju

I like old Egyptian songs from the 70s, specially the ones that talk about the victory of 1973 of Egypt in Yom Kuppor,
And I also like Yemeni classic country songs.

As for English, I like the calm quiet songs by female voice :D

Well i love hip hop but if you are trying to write code while listening i would suggest classic music (boring)

@yemeni, Please give link to your egyptian music, ever heard of tinariwen, they are egyptian and popular in the UK.

I like the female vocals in this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVqAdIMQZlk
I like to close my eyes and imagine two women humming in my ear on a comfortable sofa in turn :P

I have a love/hate relationship with that genre.

I love what it sounds like and the general feel of it.
I hate how 99% of everything in the genre is largely directionless and extremely repetitive.

Like if that style was taken and applied to a more traditional format it would be freaking amazing.

EDIT
Also.... I'm also interested in a link to Yemeni's egyptian music.

Mostly black metal. I like quite a variety though. Other than metal I like Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, a few classical/baroque composers, and a couple of rap songs.

your right disch, a lot is boring but a lot of these DJs have really good ideas and original feel to their music, you have to flick through them and get the feel and move on sometimes, you would like chinese man...one tiny collective made three albums and every other track is soooo different to the last, like miss chang, racing with the sun and get out of bed.

not one iota of simularity

@devonrevenge: links?

Also... Goldfrapp for those of you (AlitCandle) who like heavier electronica:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paLIQHZx7MM --- Goldfrapp - Crystalline Green
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuJaoVfUihA --- Goldfrapp - Ooh La La
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYCfHzlWmSU --- Goldfrapp - You never know
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWU5mvCfwVY --- Goldfrapp - Satin Chic

And I have to put 'Alive' on here even though it's off of one of their different styled albums. It's more retro 80s 'Olivia Newton John' rock style:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5UN6k1NG_4 --- Goldfrapp - Alive

EDIT: changed Satin Chic link to better quality audio

EDIT AGAIN: holy crap I just saw OP edited his post with a bunch of links!
