Jesus is said to be the shepherd of Man. This give the impression that the followers are sheep...and priest often refer to their flock.

Helios, its good that you have a brain and can think for your self. Most people don't.
That was my point.

As for the sheep part, I don't think it's supposed to be in the usual metaphorical sense. The shepherd is supposed to be God, and people are tempted by being separated from the flock. Other parables also refer to people as seeds, and IIRC the Devil plants weed at random as temptation. The sickle is judgement.

Oh, yeah! I didn't think of that.

Wow I was about to write that you guys knew more than I thought atheist/(whatever helios is) knew, then I remembered that you had Christan/Catholic backgrounds.

And the article is peaceful(ish) again.

What random musings do we choose now?

Tell you what: as soon as there's no more porn on the Internet, I'll stop my gratuitous swearing.

Fuck.

Well, that may be a while.:(

New musing: will the internet ever be replaced?

I say ... no but it will be upgraded and be de-virused ( at least tried to be ( since really the only cure for viruses would be less stupidity ) ) a few times

LOL
But I wouldn't say it was gratuitous.

Well, that may be a while.:(

It won't happen.

The internet has requested that I inform you of it's omnipotence and trans-sentience.

The internet has requested of me to inform you that it is in the midst of self-improvement. It's parent and mentor, Vint, of the clan of Cerf, has warned us of the day where we will run out of internet. The internet has seen fit to increase it's addressing range to include every star in the universe, thus protecting us from running out of internet.

Also, the internet has requested that I quote him this:
PS: STOP COMPARING ME TO AN "INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY". I'M A BUNCH OF CABLES FFS, YOU CAN'T DRIVE CARS ON ME.

( at least tried to be ( since really the only cure for viruses would be less stupidity ) ) a few times

There's no patch for human stupidity.

Upgraded? The only way that could happen would be to lay down more fiber optic cables or increasing the frequency of the repeaters (a single fiber can theoretically provide infinite bandwidth), or laying down cables to zones without cables (such as my country). IIRC, right now only 40% of the total bandwidth is allocated (for ISPs), and around half of that is actually in use. So we don't have to worry about running out of it.

As for "devirusing", forget about it. Although I don't know what the big deal with viruses is. My only AV is CommonSense 2009, and I've gotten just one or two viruses in almost two years, both due to two different brain farts. I can't imagine how people can get viruses more often than that.
And how do I know whether I'm infected? Process Explorer is running 24-7, so I can notice almost immediately if a process is doing something unusual, such as using more CPU than normal, or new processes I've never seen before pop up for no reason.

Why would we want to replace the Internet, anyway? It's perfect. Google "map of the internet" and be showered in its beauty.

EDIT: Of course it's not an information superhighway. And it's not a big truck, either. It's a series of tubes.

What? That would be like having a great friend that helped you rise to CEO out of the mail room only to have him murdered by a duck named Howard. The internet would not be what it is today without porn.

... I mean 0.0 Theres porn on the internet? When did that happen?

I never use AV programs; I very rarely get malware.

Chris, do you use linux or unix?

I use a Linux-based OS.

I'm planning to install FreeBSD when I can be bothered. It's supposed to be designed around efficiency. Already downloaded the ISOs and md5'd them a couple of days ago, I'm just too lazy to install it.

I utterly failed to install FreeBSD. Okay, I didn't fail, but I just didn't know how to get to the desktop environment. I probably should have RTFM'd, but there was no point. It's not like I was going to use it or something, I just wanted to know what it looked like.
Bah! UNIX is UNIX.
Nov 7, 2009 at 3:46am
I don't know what desktop environment it is, so yeah, I'm likely to fail too.

I'm another one who hates to RTFM. In fact, I even point-blank refuse to read maps when I don't know where I'm going. I like to work things out on my own usually.

I'mma try it on virtualbox first. But I have to install it because I couldn't boot the iso with Qemu for some reason.

Helios, wasn't it you who used OpenBSD at some point?

It is more likely that it will just carry on evolving.

Did cell phones replaces telephones or are they part of the evolution? Harddrives will be worn like jewelry.
Nov 7, 2009 at 7:26pm
Cell phones haven't replaced telephones yet. We still have landlines in my house, at least.
